If You Died Tonight, Are You 100% Sure You Would Be With God Forever?

“Nothing” is not empty space, darkness, energy, a quantum vacuum, natural laws, or unrealized potential. Those are all something. Absolute nothingness has no properties, power, laws, or ability to produce anything.

Whatever begins to exist requires a cause. Whatever is dependent or contingent cannot be its own ultimate explanation.

Either the universe is the eternal, uncaused foundation of everything, or something beyond the universe is. Yet the universe is changing, expanding, governed by conditions it did not choose, composed of dependent parts, and unable to explain why it exists at all.

Modern science traces our observable universe back approximately 13.8 billion years to an extremely hot, dense early state. Cosmic expansion, the cosmic microwave background, and its tiny primordial fluctuations strongly support this history. Many spacetimes that have, on average, been expanding are also mathematically past-incomplete, meaning their physical history cannot simply be extended backward forever. This does not scientifically observe creation from absolute nothing or tell us what existed at the earliest boundary, but it strongly challenges the idea that our physical universe is eternal and self-explanatory.

The ultimate explanation must therefore be more fundamental than physical space, time, matter, and energy. The cumulative evidence points toward one eternal, uncaused, necessary, nonphysical, immensely powerful, intelligent, personal, rational, and morally perfect Creator.

“Then Who Created God?”

The argument is not that everything has a cause. It is that whatever begins to exist, or depends upon something beyond itself, requires a cause or explanation.

God never began to exist. He is not one more dependent object inside the universe. He is the eternal, self-existent Creator upon whom everything else depends:

“From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
Psalm 90:2

If something created “God,” then that created being would not be the ultimate God under discussion. Asking “Who created God?” therefore misunderstands the argument. It is essentially asking:

“What caused the uncaused, eternal Creator to begin existing?”

He did not begin.

“Is This Just ‘God of the Gaps’?”

No.

“God of the gaps” argues:

“We do not currently understand a natural process, therefore God did it.”

The argument for God asks something much deeper:

Why do nature, natural laws, physical processes, and a universe capable of scientific investigation exist at all?

Science studies causes and processes within the natural world. Discovering another natural mechanism does not explain why the entire natural order exists.

Quantum fields, vacuums, gravity, mathematical models, and laws of physics cannot be “nothing.” They are realities that also require explanation. More scientific discovery may close gaps in our knowledge of how nature operates, but it cannot make dependent nature its own ultimate cause.

This is not an argument from what we do not know. It is an inference from what we do know: contingent things exist, beginnings require causes, absolute nothing cannot produce anything, and the universe is not its own sufficient explanation.

These arguments are not competing alternatives. They converge upon the same conclusion.

1. The Cosmological Argument: The Universe Requires a Cause

Whatever begins to exist has a cause. The universe has a finite physical history and points toward a beginning. Therefore, the universe requires a cause beyond itself.

A cause of all physical space, time, matter, and energy cannot itself be merely another physical, spatial, temporal, or material object.

2. The Contingency Argument: Dependent Reality Requires a Necessary Foundation

Everything we observe depends upon conditions beyond itself. Stars depend upon physical laws and prior matter. Organisms depend upon chemistry, energy, and an environment. Physical particles depend upon fields, constants, and governing relationships.

Explaining each dependent thing with another dependent thing never explains why the entire dependent order exists.

There must ultimately be a necessary reality that does not borrow existence from anything else and upon which all contingent reality depends.

3. The Design and Fine-Tuning Argument: Precision Points Toward Intelligence

The universe displays remarkable precision, intricate design, breathtaking beauty, mathematical intelligibility, and vast order at both the macro and micro levels.

At the cosmic level, the universe requires coordinated conditions that permit expansion without immediate collapse or runaway dispersal, the formation of galaxies, stable and long-lived stars, the production of heavier elements, planets, complex chemistry, and environments capable of supporting life.

At the microscopic level, the strengths of fundamental forces, particle masses, atomic stability, nuclear reactions, carbon chemistry, molecular bonds, and the properties of matter must work together within life-permitting ranges. The technical literature recognizes fine-tuning involving cosmological initial conditions, gravity, nuclear forces, particle properties, the cosmological constant, star formation, chemistry, and the dimensionality of space and time. Exact probability calculations remain debated, but the coordinated dependence of life upon numerous laws, constants, and initial conditions is real.

Earth itself does not merely occupy a “Goldilocks zone” where liquid surface water is possible. Habitability also depends upon a suitable star, atmosphere, planetary mass, chemistry, orbit, rotation, long-term climate, and many interacting conditions. The point is not that every individual feature proves God by itself. The point is that many independent conditions work together within one coherent, life-permitting system.

The universe’s beauty is not a mathematical proof by itself. Yet majestic galaxies, ordered mathematics, living cells, colors, music, landscapes, conscious experience, and humanity’s ability to recognize beauty fit naturally within a world created intentionally by an intelligent God.

Chance is not a creative power. It is a way of describing possibilities or our uncertainty about causes. Saying something occurred “by chance” does not explain what produced it, why the relevant possibilities existed, or why the laws governing them were present.

4. The Moral Argument: Objective Evil Requires Objective Good

This argument does not claim that atheists cannot recognize or perform good actions. They clearly can.

It asks what makes anything objectively right or wrong.

If abusing children, rape, slavery, torture, betrayal, and murder are truly evil regardless of personal preference, culture, power, evolutionary advantage, or majority vote, then morality transcends human opinion.

Biology may help explain why humans possess certain social instincts. Society can reward or punish behavior. Neither can transform:

“We dislike this”

into:

“Every person is morally obligated not to do this, even if an entire society approves.”

Objective moral value is grounded in God’s perfectly good and unchanging character. Objective moral obligation is grounded in His rightful authority over the people He created.

5. Logic, Reason, and the Impossibility of the Contrary

Anyone arguing against God must still rely upon objective truth, valid reasoning, the laws of logic, reliable memory, meaningful language, and an orderly universe.

A person cannot deny logic without using logic. The statement “logic does not exist” attempts to use logical contradiction to communicate that logic does not exist.

The laws of logic are not physical objects. You cannot weigh the law of non-contradiction, locate it in a drawer, or alter it through cultural opinion. Yet rational thought and communication are impossible without it.

Science also presupposes that:

• Truth exists.
• Nature is sufficiently orderly.
• Similar causes ordinarily produce similar effects.
• Human reasoning can discover truths about the external world.
• Mathematical relationships apply to physical reality.

The issue is not whether unbelievers can reason. They can because they live in God’s world and bear His image. The deeper question is whether a worldview consisting ultimately of impersonal matter and unguided processes can adequately account for universal laws of logic, rational minds, objective truth, moral obligation, and the intelligibility of nature.

The Christian worldview grounds these realities in the eternal, rational, truthful, faithful, and unchanging nature of God.

6. The Argument from Consciousness and Mind

Physical matter has measurable properties such as mass, charge, location, and motion. Conscious experience includes thoughts, intentions, reasoning, meaning, self-awareness, moral awareness, and the experience of truth and beauty.

Brain activity is closely connected with human thought, but describing electrical and chemical activity is not the same as explaining why subjective consciousness, rational insight, intentionality, and personal identity exist.

Personal, rational minds fit more naturally within a universe grounded in an eternal Mind than within a reality in which mindless matter is ultimate.

7. The Ontological Argument: God as the Necessarily Existing, Maximally Great Being

God is not merely a very powerful being who happens to exist somewhere. God is the maximally great Being, perfect in knowledge, power, goodness, and necessary existence.

The modal ontological argument reasons:

If the existence of a maximally great Being is genuinely possible, then such a Being exists in at least one possible world. But necessary existence means existing in every possible world. Therefore, He exists in the actual world.

This argument does not claim that imagining something makes it real. Imagining a perfect island does not make it exist because islands are contingent physical objects. The argument concerns a Being whose greatness includes necessary existence.

Its central question is profound:

Is the necessarily existent, maximally great God logically impossible, or is He real?

If He is genuinely possible, His existence cannot be merely optional.

Atheism is not an intellectually neutral position once it claims that physical reality is all that exists. It must also explain why anything exists, why the universe is orderly and intelligible, why logic is universally valid, why rational minds can know truth, why consciousness exists, and why objective moral obligations bind us.

Simply naming “nature,” “chance,” “evolution,” “the multiverse,” or “science” does not answer those ultimate questions. Each proposed explanation must itself exist, possess particular properties, operate according to laws, and have sufficient explanatory power.

Creation does not reveal everything about God, but it reveals enough for humanity to recognize His eternal power and divine nature and to seek, honor, and thank Him (Psalm 19:1–4; Romans 1:18–25; Acts 14:15–17; 17:24–31).

These arguments lead us to an eternal, necessary, powerful, intelligent, personal, rational, and morally perfect Creator. They do not, by themselves, tell us everything He has revealed or fully establish Christianity.

That requires the next questions:

Has this Creator spoken? Can the Bible be trusted? Who is Jesus Christ? Did He truly die and rise bodily from the dead? What does God require of you?

The evidence concerning Scripture, fulfilled prophecy, Jesus’ identity, crucifixion, and resurrection identifies the Creator and leads directly to the most important truth of all: how guilty sinners can be forgiven, born again, reconciled to God, and receive eternal life through Jesus Christ.
